This week will focus on:
Problem-solving step
1. Scoping (define the problem,
disaggregate)
2. Analyse (prioritize, workplan,
analyse)
3. Decision (synthesize,
communicate)
This week’s to-do list:
• Attend: Synchronous (live) lecture online. You can access the
zoom link underneath the Lecture and Tutorial Links Moodle
section.
• Watch: Recording of lecture, if you missed the lecture or need to do
revision.
• Attend: Synchronous (live) tutorial. You can access the zoom link
underneath the Lecture and Tutorial Links Moodle section.
• Provide feedback: Tell us how Week 10 went for you.
• Assessments: continue completing the Case Report (Assessment
2b)
• Reliability and validity
Evaluating Evidence
Reliability and validity
Reliability – Consistency Validity – Accuracy
Reliability ≠ Validity (i.e. getting consistent results doesn’t
mean that your results are correct!)
Reliability
Reliability refers to how consistently a method measures
something, there are 3 types of consistency:
Type of reliability Measures the consistency of… Examples
Test-Retest Over time
A measure of stability
Multiple blood tests for
diabetes show same results
Internal Consistency Across items
A measure of how consistently
each item measures the sameAssessment 2a Feedback
Overall areas done well
• Generating descriptive statistics tables and discussing in relation to single variables – mean,
median, skewness
• Discussion of factors contributing to the values of these variables.
• Generation of relevant correlations – for variables of interest
• Subsequent discussion either of these correlations, or variables that could be expected to be
correlated.
• Use of appropriate graphs to plot key associations between variables
• Recognition of moral dilemma in ethical issues and some supporting discussion
• Logic tree – most done were MECE
• Literature – overall, a sound level of reference to, and incorporation of, relevant literature.
Areas for improvement (where better responses stood out)
• Problem framing – using the 5W’s and considering the stakeholders.
• Literature – linking the literature from the issue to the ECT issue
• In some cases, the choice of graphs could be improved – think of what best tells the story
• Ensuring that your graphs support your argument and are incorporated in it. In effect, ask yourself,
what does this graph tell the reader and how can I add explanation to reinforce its value
• Correlations – discussing what variables could be expected to be correlated.
• If using a scatterplot, adding a trendline or discussing what the plot shows is always useful.
• Discuss what may have contributed to particular mean, median, skewness or correlation values.
• Ethics – discuss the issue through the ethical viewpoints’ lenses.
Overall average = 15.85/25
